In the Academic Zoo, the zookeepers controlled everything – the feeding schedules, the cages, and who moved between enclosures.
A young elephant noticed the same animals were always chosen for the best habitats and enjoyed upgraded enclosures. “Why don’t you give others a chance” she asked.
The zookeepers shrugged; “we pick the most deserving.” So, the elephant forged her own key, opened the gates, and showed the other animals the opportunities beyond.
Moral – Equity requires dismantling gatekeeping, not just redistributing its power!
How do you experience your academic career progress? What are your strategies to ‘open the gates yourself’?
