#EveryLittleActionCounts Week 40: Use Inclusive Language

Inclusive language is a powerful tool for fostering belonging and respect in academic settings. By choosing words that are respectful and representative of all identities, we can create an environment where everyone feels valued and seen. Using inclusive language challenges biases, promotes equity, and encourages a culture of thoughtfulness and care, making academia more accessible and welcoming for diverse communities.

“Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.”

– Verna Myers

Academics can foster the use of inclusive language by:

Using gender-neutral terms

You may use inclusive terms such as “everyone” or “colleagues” instead of gendered phrases like “ladies and gentlemen”.

Using individuals’ correct pronouns

Ask for and use individual’s correct pronouns and encourage others to do the same.

Do not perpetuate stereotypes or assumptions in communication

Avoid perpetuating stereotypes or assumptions whether it is in academic writing, lectures or informal conversations.

We would be very happy to hear about your strategies for using inclusive language.
